Catering, laundries and printing
(This industry provides employment for over 500 prisoners)
Did you know CIE operates:
- Central kitchens in each of New Zealand’s 20 prisons
- 20 laundries including one semi-commercial operation in the Wellington region
- 1 Print Shop
- 1 distribution service centre
- 1 uniform distribution centre
The services within this industry, excluding the print shop and semi-commercial laundry, are for the purposes of servicing the prisons.
Central kitchen facts:
- Prisoners working within the central kitchens prepare pre-determined and nationally consistent meals for over 8,000 prisoners a day.
- Three meals are prepared for prisoners each day.
- The average cost of feeding a prisoner is $4 per day.
- Kitchens work off a national menu of which there consists a range of menu options that are certified by qualified dieticians.
- The kitchens at Wellington and Waikeria prisons provide external catering services to government agencies.
Laundries:
- All prisons excluding Rimutaka and Manawatu have their own laundries for washing prison-issued clothing, bedding and towels.
- Wellington Prison operates a small semi-commercial laundry for small businesses.
Print Shop facts:
- The print ship provide printing and design services for the Department and a number of external clients. Products range from letterhead and business cards to full colour brochures, bound catalogues and large format printing.
P119 service centre:
- This is a central distribution centre for goods ordered by prisoners located at Auckland Women’s Prison.
- The centre is a trial and will be implemented within other prisons in the future with the next to be opened at Spring Hill.
- Prisoners are allowed to place orders from an approved list of items.
Uniform distribution centre:
- This centre is located at Rimutaka Prison.
- It orders and distributes uniforms for Corrections staff throughout New Zealand.
