Forestry, timber processing, furniture and bedding
(This industry provides employment for over 450 prisoners)

Where are products from these industries sold?
- Joinery workshops:
- Bedroom Rimu and Pine furniture that is made within the joinery workshops is sold to a range of retailers including Harvey Norman, Best Buys, Canary Furniture and Mikes Furniture To Go.
- Retractable attic stairs are manufactured at the Hawkes Bay joinery workshop on behalf of Auckland-based Sellwood Products Ltd.
- Timber:
- Logs from the Tongariro/Rangipo Prison forest are sold to New Zealand sawmills and also exported overseas.
- Timber processing is contracted by a number of external wood processing companies. Operations include docking, finger jointing, dressing and sawmilling
- External crews are employed on a contractual basis with a range of external clients including Palmerston North City Council, Winita, Craig Pine, Pan Pac and Porirua City Council.
- Textile workshops:
- Clothing made within the textile workshops is provided to prisoners and Corrections Officers.
- Bedding made within the textile workshops is used internally within the prisons and sold to Rest Homes, Child Youth and Family and the NZ Police.
Joinery workshops:
- Joinery workshops are located within the Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Wanganui, Rimutaka and Invercargill prisons.
- The products made within the joinery workshops include scotch chests, bedside cabinets, bed frames and blanket boxes. Other furniture such as TV cabinets and entertainment centres are made upon request.
Furniture assembly workshops:
- Furniture assembly workshops are located within the Waikeria, Christchurch Men’s and Auckland Women’s prisons.
Tongariro/Rangipo Prison forest facts:
- Stretches across 4,500 hectares
- Maintains Douglas Fir and Radiata Pine
- Logs are sold within New Zealand and exported overseas
- The forest is being harvested to ensure long-term sustainability
Timber processing workshops:
- Timber processing workshops are located at Wanganui, Christchurch Men’s and Tongariro/Rangipo prisons.
- Firewood splitting is contracted at Christchurch Men’s Prison for City Firewood.
Textile workshop locations:
- Textile workshops are located within the Auckland Men’s, Auckland Women’s, Arohata, Rolleston, Christchurch Women’s and Waikeria Prisons and produce bedding, clothing, duvet covers, curtains and cushions.
- Products are very durable and meet the strict fire safety and hygiene standards required to meet the following industry sector requirements: NZ Police, Child Youth and Family and Rest Homes.
