The Drug Treatment Unit (DTU) provides a group-based programme in a therapeutic environment for prisoners with alcohol and drug related issues.

The DTU teaches prisoners about addiction, change, relapse and the effects of their actions upon others. The aim of the programme is to reduce re-offending by assisting programme participants to address their dependence on alcohol and other drugs.

The three-month intensive programme is for prisoners serving shorter sentences. The intensive programme delivers the same treatment hours but over a shorter timeframe.

Length of programme

  • 3 months (intensive) plus pre-commitment phase
  • 6 months plus pre-commitment phase

Location and Provider

Three 3-month (intensive) DTU programmes are delivered by:

  • Care NZ in Otago Corrections Facility and Whanganui Prison
  • Odyssey House Trust in Auckland Prison.

Six 6-month DTU programmes are delivered by Care NZ in the following Corrections facilities:

  • Arohata Women’s Prison
  • Rimutaka Prison
  • Spring Hill Corrections Facility
  • Christchurch Men’s Prison
  • Waikeria Prison
  • Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison.
