  • In August 2009 there was more than 8300 prisoners spread across 20 prisons throughout the country.
     
  • Corrections has 17 men's prisons and three women's, capable of accommodating 9,131 prisoners in total.
     
  • New Zealand’s rate of imprisonment per head of population is 185 per 100,000.
     
  • The average cost per offender in prison was $249.25 per day or $90,977 per year.
     
  • Maori comprised 50 percent of the prison population.
     
  • Female prisoners made up six percent of the prison population. 
     
  • The rate of positive random drug tests was 10.5 percent.
     

Community sentences related information

  • In the 2008-2009 financial year Corrections managed 66,635 new community-based sentences and orders.
     
  • The average cost per offender on a community-based sentence was $9.92 per day or $3622 per year.
     
  • Offenders serving Community Work sentences completed almost 3.3 million hours of work in total. 

Number of reports prepared

  • In the 2008-2009 financial year, probation officers and psychologists completed 44,596 pre-sentence and oral reports and 108 psychological reports for courts.
     
  • 5595 parole assessment reports, 1095 psychological reports for the Parole Board, 356 home leave reports, 486 progress reports to the Parole Board and 191 Judicial Monitoring Reports.

Financial and staffing information
Corrections received $886 million of funding from the Government and had assets of $1.9 billion (all figures GST exclusive).

Corrections employed more than 6,900 full-time equivalent staff (6911 at 30 June 2008). These included approximately:

  • 102 psychologists and support staff
     
  • 303 instructors
     
  • 80 programme facilitators
