Wellington Prison, also known as Mt Crawford, can accommodate up to 140 prisoners with security classifications ranging from minimum to medium. The prison only accommodated prisoners on voluntary segregation – who have asked to be separated from the mainstream prison population.
Wellington Prison was built in 1927 and replaced the original Terrace Gaol in central Wellington.
The prison is part of Prison Services’ Southern Region.

Security
Protecting the public is the Department’s highest priority, and this is accomplished through the secure incarceration of prisoners.
The level of physical security at each prison varies and is dependant on the type of prisoner accommodated.
Because Wellington Prison accommodates prisoners who have been assessed as a minimal risk to the public, the level of physical security is low.
Wellington Prison is surrounded by a four-metre solid concrete wall and the area immediately surrounding the wall is equipped with surveillance equipment.
The prison also has a single point of entry, called the gatehouse.
Everyone entering the prison, including staff, must pass through the gatehouse, where their belongings would be x-rayed and they would pass through a metal detector.
