Organisational Development provides both strategic advice and day-to-day support and services to the Chief Executive and Corrections managers on:

The Strategy, Policy and Service team is responsible for co-ordinating HR strategic and business planning, and the development, documentation and review of HR policy and resources. The team also provides organisational change support, oversight of the remuneration and performance management policies and frameworks, and integration of the equity, diversity and cultural responsiveness strategies into policy and practice.
In 2007 the separate HR teams from the Department’s three services (Community Probation Services, Prison Services and Rehabilitation) became part of Organisational Development.

In addition to the training and development function currently within the HR teams, a small Leadership Capability unit in Organisational Development manages the delivery of departmental programmes as well as co-ordinating some cross-departmental courses.
Payroll co-ordinates payment each fortnight to more than 7,500 employees (including casual staff who work as and when required) in accordance with the terms and conditions of a range of collective and individual employment agreements. The Payroll team also provides employee-related information to managers and for internal and external reporting.
The Heath and Safety team ensures that Corrections meets its statutory and contractual obligations to provide a safe and healthy work environment for its staff. The team is responsible for the strategic direction of national health and safety management and the development of best practice policies and procedures based on and supported by accurate information and risk analysis and management.
The Employee Relations team is responsible for maintaining sustainable long-term employee relations within the Department. This includes developing the overall bargaining strategy, managing positive and proactive working relationships with unions, and providing a centralised source of advice on the negotiation and implementation of collective employment agreements and associated employee relations issues.
In addition to several staff with legal training, Organisational Development has its own Legal Advisor who provides expert advice on all employment law matters to other members of the Group and to managers across the Department.
