Recruitment Process - Overseas applications

Making an application
Overseas candidates are able to apply for specific vacancies as advertised on this website under Current Vacancies page. General applications (i.e. not for a specific vacancy) will not be accepted.

Along with your application form you will need to provide details of your criminal background history from the police or court system in your home country (whilst candidates may be required to obtain this as part of their immigration to New Zealand this is also required separately for consideration as part of the job application process). This form of evidence will need to be provided by hard copy documentation from your police or court system.

Please note the strict selection criteria as set out below before applying for a vacancy. Appointment in all cases is made at Correction Officer level.

Selection Criteria
To apply you will need to:

  • be currently employed as a Custodial Officer, Prison Officer or Corrections Officer with a minimum of four years experience .
  • have the ability to communicate effectively in English
  • have a Drivers Licence that enables you to drive both manual and automatic cars in New Zealand. To find out more information about recognition of international driving licences go to Land Transport New Zealand website.

Note:

  • If you have less than four years custodial experience you will be required to have New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency before your application can be considered. Refer to Immigration New Zealand website for more information on obtaining  New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.

Selection Process

The Recruitment Coordinator will contact you to discuss the selection process and to arrange for you to undertake a personality profile assessment electronically online from your current country.

The following stages of the selection process will need to be undertaken in New Zealand:

  • verbal and numerical testing
  • a medical examination and physical fitness assessment
  • a structured interview
  • completion of first aid training from a recognised provider in New Zealand prior to starting employment – this will not need to be completed prior to an offer of employment  but employment is subject to completion.
  • a visit to a prison facility to get an understanding of the New Zealand custodial environment.

Note:

  • All costs associated with travelling to New Zealand to undertake recruitment selection processes will be at candidates’ expense. A Recruitment Coordinator will help candidates to organise their visit.
  • Offers of employment made will be subject to candidates obtaining permanent residency via application to the New Zealand Immigration Service.
  • You will be responsible for obtaining your own immigration clearance including meeting the full costs of the immigration application. Candidates will need to apply directly to and meet the immigration criteria set by Immigration New Zealand and may be able to utilise a job offer from the Department of Corrections as part of this process.
  • Immigration New Zealand will only consider evidence of a job offer as part of the immigration criteria where candidates already have more than four years custodial experience.
