Key responsibilities

  • Day to day deployment of detector dogs to assist with ensuring public safety, reduction of re-offending and better public value.
  • To work closely with the Regional Supervisor to ensure the optimal deployment of detector dogs in prisons and other government agencies if/when required.
  • To provide support to operational strategies aimed at reducing drugs and other contraband in prisons.
  • To assist in the development and implementing of systems for ensuring proactive operational drug reduction strategies.

Operations

  • Conduct searches as directed by the Regional Supervisor that is consistent with relevant legislation and Department procedures.
  • Ensure the application of relevant legislation in relation to searching, contraband management, detain and arrest procedures.
  • Ensure all administrative and operational instructions are adhered to as required by the Regional Supervisor.
  • To attend court and misconducts hearing for the purpose of providing evidence as and when required.
  • Ensure all assigned departmental vehicles and equipment are kept to a reasonable standard of cleanliness and maintenance. Report losses, faults or any damages to the Regional Supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work with minimal supervision to achieve the targets set by the Regional Supervisor and agreed with by the Dog Handler.
  • Provide detector dog support to other agencies such as Police and Customs

Training

  • Support L&D to provide training of drug identification, detain & arrest procedures, legislation and prison checkpoints for staff & the wider community if / when necessary.
  • Undertake and satisfactorily complete all training as directed by the Regional Supervisor to ensure the required skills are maintained and any performance discrepancies are eliminated.
  • Assist the Prison Directors to ensure that custodial staff deployed to assist Detector Dog Teams are trained in all facets of searching and supporting the use of detector dogs.

Relationship management

  • Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • To provide a quality customer service focus.

Health and Safety

  • Help maintain a safe working environment within Corrections by:
    - reporting any hazards, and any accidents or near misses that occur
    - adhering to departmental safety standards and processes
    - participating in health and safety programmes as required, including own rehabilitation if a work injury is sustained.
