We all need to play our part to stop crime.
By calling the Crimestoppers phone line (0800 555 111) you can pass on any information about criminal activity in the community or prisons completely anonymously. You can also fill in the Giving Information Form on the Crimestoppers website.
The service does not identify callers in any way and is free. Members of the public can phone at any time to pass on information about crimes being planned for the future, crimes that were committed in the past or to simply report something suspicious that they have noticed.
Crimestoppers passes on the information it receives to the relevant authorities for further investigation but does not include any details about the person who made the call.
Prisoners are also able to phone Crimestoppers from prison payphones without being identified or having the call monitored but they can often be reluctant to do so for various reasons. However, overseas experience has shown they often feel more comfortable passing information on to a family member or friend who can then make the call from the outside completely anonymously.
Offenders and their family and friends can have a great deal of useful knowledge about criminal activity. It could be about a prisoner putting pressure on his partner to bring drugs into the prison, overhearing someone brag about past crimes they committed or being aware of plans for a robbery.
The more people that use this service the more effective we can be at stopping crime. Using Crimestoppers can help not only make our communities safer for those on the outside but also make our prisons safer for those on the inside.
Crimestoppers New Zealand is an independent charity that was established here following the theft of Victoria Crosses from the Army Museum in 2008. It is modelled on similar services in the United States and United Kingdom and in January 2011, a record 982 calls were received by Crimestoppers in New Zealand.
Crimestoppers don't want to know who you are but they want to know what you know.
