A map showing the location of prisons around New Zealand.I think my relative/friend is in prison. How can I find out?
If you wish to contact someone you believe is in prison but do not know their whereabouts you can write to the Department to try and find out.

The following information must be included in your enquiry:

  • The full name of the person you want to contact
  • Any other names by which they may have been known
  • Date of birth of the person you wish to contact
  • Reason for enquiry
  • Your postal address

If the person is in custody, your details will be passed to them. The prisoner will then decide if they wish their location to be revealed to you.

The Department will respond to you within about a month.

If the prisoner wishes to be contacted by you, you will be sent their location details.

If the person is not in prison or does not want to have contact with you, the Department will respond saying it has no information to give you regarding that person.

All replies and disclosures of information will be in accordance with the Privacy and Official Information Act.

If you wish to locate a prisoner, you can email your request to info@corrections.govt.nz or post a letter to:
