Victim notification offers victims of serious crime an opportunity to stay informed about the person who offended against them.

Under the Victims' Rights Act 2002, people eligible to receive notifications are those who have been the victim:

  • of sexual violation or other serious assault, or
  • of an offence that resulted in serious injury to a person, in the death of a person, or in a person being incapable
  • or if the victim has reasonable grounds to fear for the physical safety or security of themselves or their immediate family.

The Victims' Rights Act 2002  (external link) requires the New Zealand Police (external link) to receive and verify applications from victims who wish to use this service.

Once an application is verified, Police forward offender and victim details to Corrections or the Ministry of Health to provide notification services.
