Russell Baker, Assistant Sector Manager, and Ruth Turner, Sector Manager - both of CIE Internal Services - receive the award from Norm Thomson, Deputy CEO of Air New Zealand and Chairman of the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association. Members of the Canterbury Prisons Catering Team had reason to celebrate on 6 July after winning the Excellence in Training Workplace (Food Services/Catering) Award at the Hospitality Standards Institute Awards.

Corrections teams from both Waikeria and Canterbury were nominated for the  award. CIE National Manager Brent Maughan says, “To have one of our teams win was fantastic! To have two teams nominated is a credit to the Internal Services team and all the work that they have put into developing and running the catering training programmes offered in prisons.”

Hospitality Standards Institute Chief Executive Steve Hanrahan was quick to congratulate the Canterbury Team and show his support for CIE. “I’m really pleased for CIE and congratulate them on winning this award,” said Steve.

“We have seen a consistently high standard of training being delivered in prisons, and the win for Corrections illustrates that their training is up there with the best being offered in New Zealand.”

“CIE has shown a very strong commitment to training over a number of years. We’re happy to work with CIE – they have a strong team of committed assessors and managers and we absolutely support them in the work that they do.”

Prisoners are able to participate in NZQA recognised training while in prison, and earn credits towards qualifications to help them gain employment on release.

“Our staff are dedicated to training prisoners, and having one of our teams win this award is recognition that the hard work we are putting in across all areas of CIE is making a difference,” says Brent.
