A total of 18 Christchurch prisoners achieved the hospitality industry’s Level 2 National Certificate in Cookery. A number of these prisoners have since either been released or transferred, but the seven remaining prisoners were presented with their certificates at Christchurch Men’s Prison on 17 February.
To facilitate this course Corrections worked together with the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI), an industry-led training organisation.
“HSI operates in all areas of hospitality and we really support the prisons’ commitment to national qualifications in their rehabilitation programmes,” says HSI’s Chief Executive, Steve Hanrahan.
The Certificate in Cookery covers a wide range of skills in food safety, cleaning and working in a team as well as technical cooking skills. Prisoners from Christchurch Men’s Prison and Rolleston Prison learnt these skills from qualified catering instructors and then put them into practice at the prison’s working kitchen.
“It’s quite an achievement for the prisoners to have completed this course,” says CIE Assistant Sector Manager Russell Baker. “We have a great working relationship with HSI.”
