CIE’s Wanganui Concrete Factory supplies pre-cast panels for the Rimutaka Expansion Project as a subcontractor to Hawkins Construction.
Hawkins has previously been contracted by Corrections for the construction of Auckland Region Women’s and Otago Corrections Facilities.
The latest project requires about 200 pre-cast panels for the new gate house, administration areas, visits centre, cells and the staff amenity block. The biggest panel is about 4 x 12m and weighs about 14 ton while the smallest panels are about 1m square.
Important lessons
About 78 prisoners at Auckland and Wanganui are involved in this project. The major benefit for them is the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills relating to aspects of concrete pre-casting such as reading plans, boxing, installation of inserts, steel bending and tying, pouring, and finishing.
Other important lessons are the quality control checking at all stages and crane operation, particularly lifting panels from the pre-casting beds.
