Brent-MaughanCIE is not sheltered from the effects of global economic issues.

CIE, like many other organisations, is feeling the impact of the current economic situation. In response, we are making sure resources are available where they are needed most, while seeking to improve our operational efficiency.

Nevertheless, there are always opportunities. We are constantly on the lookout for new business partnerships where CIE can deliver value to businesses and at the same time expand employment training
for prisoners.

We continue to deliver quality employment training and activities, for example 36 prisoners have gained their national certificate in Level 2 Cookery since 1 July 2008.

We have also had 194 prisoners on Trade and Technical Training. This training has been provided in fields such as horticulture, carpentry, forestry, small engines maintenance and painting.

It is generally delivered to higher security prisoners, preparing them for future employment in CIE industries and Release to Work.

To facilitate Trade and Technical Training we have established partnerships with Northtec, Weltec and UCOL, who deliver courses at Northland Region Corrections Facility, Manawatu Prison, Rimutaka Prison and Wanganui Prison.

CIE is future focused and is continuing to train prisoners in industries and locations where there are identified long-term skill shortages. This strategy is consistent with ensuring prisoners are best equipped to secure and keep a legitimate job on release and provides a pool of trained and qualified people.

Ultimately, improving productivity in New Zealand comes down to upskilling New Zealanders and CIE is seeking to contribute effectively to that effort and to reducing re-offending.

WHY CIE WORKS FOR US

“The Department of Corrections has been extremely helpful to us by supplying excellent produce at certain times of the year when no one else does.
Their fresh produce is delivered on a daily basis and supplies exactly what the market needs. We can’t get better than that.”

Steve Wylie
Southern Manager Fresh Direct
