The Corrections website, www.corrections.govt.nz, is sporting a fresh new look, having been updated to meet e-government website guidelines.

“We haven’t changed the structure of the site but have given it a cleaner and simpler look,” says Chief Information Officer Derek Lyons.

“The e-government guidelines emphasise making content accessible for all people and the changes are designed to deliver that. We’ve pared down the navigation of the pages, making it easier for readers to click around the site to the information they’re looking for,” says Derek.

The style of the homepage has been changed so that it focuses on a particular aspect of the many facets of Corrections’ work.

“This may be something topical, or something we want to draw attention to and will change regularly.”

Other additions to the site include a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page and converting content into more user-friendly HTML (a language in which web pages are written) pages.

What is the e-government strategy? The purpose of e-government is to improve the ability of all people to participate in our democracy, ensuring that New Zealand is a world leader in e-government. The mission of the e-government strategy is that:

  • By June 2007, networks and Internet technologies will be integral to the delivery of government information, services and processes.
  • By June 2010, the operation of government will have been transformed through its use of the Internet.

New Zealanders will be able to gain access to government information and services using the Internet, telephones and other technologies as they emerge.

New technologies will provide people with more convenient access to government information and services, improve the quality of the services and provide greater opportunities to participate in democratic institutions and processes. Egovernment presents opportunities to move forward in the 21st century with higher quality, cost-effective, government services and a better relationship between New Zealanders and their government.
