Learning printing skills at Wellington Prison’s Print Shop.

Wellington Prison’s Print Shop isn’t just dealing with an end-of-year rush - it’s busy all year round.

“There’s constant work - which is great because the more work there is the more the prisoners learn,” says Corrections Inmate Employment Instructor Terry O’Leary.

Prisoners in the Print Shop produce prison stationery, training manuals and seasonal jobs such as Corrections’ Christmas cards. They also have a plastics division that custom-makes folders and ring-binders.

Prisoners learn traditional off-set printing and new digital methods.

“This gives the prisoners a wide variety of skills they can use to find jobs in the printing industry when they’re released,” says Terry.

Many prisoners formalise their skills by achieving NZQA printing qualifications.

“When the guys see their name on the certificate it gives them a huge boost to know they can achieve something like that,” Terry says.

Long-standing client, Business and Advertising Manager of Centre News Sid DeLew, says that the Wellington Jewish Community’s monthly newsletter is always a quality print job.

“Their work is first class and always on time. Wellington’s Jewish community thinks it is extremely important to offer an opportunity for the guys to develop skills that they can use when they are released.”
