The Justice Sector Information Strategy 2006-2011 is about to be launched.

The new strategy is the third such document issued by the justice sector.

Under the previous strategies the sector has worked closely to successfully migrate from the Law Enforcement System (known formerly as the Wanganui Computer) to seven operational systems across four agencies.

That work has led to the development of a world-class information base which is supported by routine sharing of information through approximately 24 data exchange interfaces and is estimated to facilitate around 12 million transactions per annum.

The new strategy recognises that the completion of that work places the sector in a different environment and there are significant opportunities to extend the benefits of our investment to improve information and service delivery.

The document highlights key strategic initiatives for the sector over the next five years. These include data exchanges with new agencies, improving the quality and integrity of data, improving information and service provision to our communities, and enhanced collaboration.

“This has been a significant piece of work involving a large number of people across the sector, broader government and other stakeholders,” says Dougal McKechnie, Manager Justice Information Strategy. “The new strategy starts from a strong base and presents some exciting opportunities over the next five years.”

The Hon Clayton Cosgrove, Associate Minister of Justice, recently took a tour of the Lower Hutt Police Station and Courthouse and observed the core technology systems of Police, Corrections and Courts in action.
