Every staff member receives a copy of the Code of Conduct when they join Corrections.

The Code takes a positive, principlebased approach in describing the behaviour expected of staff, recognising that they work in an environment that regularly requires judgements and decisions to be made in difficult and complex situations.

Staff are encouraged to talk with their manager at any time they are uncertain about any areas of the Code, or if they think they may be at risk of breaching it. Staff should refer to the Code to check that their conduct is professional.

All staff should sign the code when they join Corrections, but are still covered by its obligations and consequences even if they haven’t. For instance, serious misconduct can lead to severe penalty, including dismissal without warning.

Examples of serious misconduct:

  • making unauthorised statements to the media or the public about work-related matters
  • disclosing official information without authority (“leaking”)
  • intentionally downloading, holding, transmitting, viewing or presenting to any other person any sexual, pornographic, racist or other material from the internet or any other source which is likely to be offensive
  • violence or threats of violence against offenders or others in the workplace
  • threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour to any person in the workplace
  • giving false information or failing to disclose material information requested when applying for employment with Corrections
  • failing to comply with any of Corrections’ safety policies, procedures, operating instructions or rules.
