The first recipients of a new health and safety awards scheme for Corrections staff who have made an outstanding contribution to workplace safety have been announced.
“I was really impressed by the initiative, enthusiasm and hard work people displayed in setting up and maintaining health and safety initiatives in Corrections. The Star Awards for Excellence in Health and Safety are a way of rewarding these efforts while highlighting the work that they do,” says National Manager Health and Safety Tarniya Comrie.
The creation of the Star Awards for Excellence in Health and Safety highlights Corrections’ commitment to health and safety - as its accreditation to the ACC Partnership Programme reflects. Through the programme, Corrections takes responsibility for its workplace health and safety, and injury, rehabilitation and claims management. This allows Corrections to minimise work related injuries and raise the level of its health and safety provision.
Star Recipients for Excellence in Health and Safety include:
Over the last two years Sonya has implemented Assets & Property’s health and safety policy. Sonya performed her duties to such a high standard that all the required audits were passed with flying colours.
During this time, Sonya also gained a relevant tertiary qualification and inducted over 1,600 people in health and safety practices.
For much of 2005 the Hawera Building underwent major building renovations, throughout which the site remained safe with no accidents reported. A credit to Annette’s hard work as the Health and Safety Representative.
Other winners are: Evelyn Campbell, Antony Lawrence, Noel Aukett, Bruce Nelson, Paul Uttinger and Syde Rapata.
“Corrections is committed to the provision of a safe and healthy working environment for all its employees, contractors, volunteers and visitors,” says Chief Executive Barry Matthews. “I congratulate these winners on their success, and thank them for their dedication in ensuring our commitment is reached.”
