Skip bins, trailers and steel structures are adding up to qualifications at Christchurch Prison.

Six prisoners from the Prison’s engineering workshop have been awarded National Certificates in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering.

“I am always impressed by the commitment prisoners make in achieving these and other qualifications offered by Corrections Inmate Employment,” says Ken Culverwell of Engineering Industry Training Organisation, Competenz.

Engineering qualifications achieved by prisoners mean a higher chance of a job on release. Competenz Assessment Coordinator Ken Culverwell, Acting Principal Instructor CIE Engineering John Hewitson and CIE Christchurch Manager Bruce Hartley present a prisoner with his certificate.
