A Community Probation Service recruitment drive is underway to attract new staff to help implement and manage new community sentences that are likely to be operative from 1 October 2007.

If turnover is factored in, around 392 additional staff will be needed by the end of 2007, including 289 new probation officers, 34 service managers and 69 administration officers.

The new staff will also help manage the extra workload flowing from two new corrections facilities opening next year at Spring Hill in north Waikato and Otago and from the Government’s announcement of an extra 1000 police.

General Manager of Probation and Offender Services Katrina Casey says Corrections must be seen as an employer of choice, offering an exciting environment for people who want to help others change their lives.

“We want people who are serious about making a positive difference to New Zealand society,” she says.

“We need professional people with integrity and tenacity. They must value diversity and be able to effectively and efficiently contribute to our work, helping us achieve our objective of making New Zealand a safer place to live.”

Probation and Offender Services wants people from a wide range of backgrounds including those who have worked in related areas, people with relevant life experience, or recent graduates seeking a career that can make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders.

Almost half the new recruits will be needed in the northern region, with the remainder spread evenly between the central and southern regions.
