Prisoners such as Jeff make workbenches and tool cupboards
as part of their construction course.

Trusted prisoners are those who prove they are committed to turning their lives around. They show good behaviour, integrity and a positive attitude.
Jeff was recognised as a trusted prisoner when he completed the first Elementary Construction Course at the Northland Region Corrections Facility earlier this year and received a Certificate in Elementary Construction.
Corrections Inmate Employment Site Operations Manager John Lee says Jeff was a role model for other prisoners.
“When Jeff finished the course we recognised him as a trusted prisoner. His talents were invaluable and he was employed as an assistant to the carpentry tutors and as a mentor to the next group of prisoners doing the course,” John says.
Jeff has now moved on to a highly responsible position as an assistant to the general maintenance officer, working both inside and outside the security wall, but is still based on prison property.
“Jeff ’s story is a good example of Corrections’ Prisoner Employment Strategy in action,” explains John.
“The Strategy aims to increase prisoner participation in meaningful employment opportunities and training.”
The staff at the Prison are delighted with Jeff’s contribution, and say that he is hardworking, punctual, trustworthy and “doing brilliantly”.
