Site Property Officer Allan Cobb shows off the energy-saving boilers at Wanganui Prison.

Wanganui Prison’s new boilers are proving to be champions in Corrections’ award-winning energy efficiency initiative.

“The new boilers work 50 percent harder than the old ones, but consume around 25 percent less gas per prisoner - and that’s a good saving,” says Site Property Officer Allan Cobb.

Allan has seen the project through and is very happy with the benefits of the new, fullyautomated boiler system.

“The two old boilers in the 28-year-old Kaitoke Boiler House were very inefficient and an upgrade of the remand area made it even less economical to keep running them,” Allan says.

“We installed three new boilers to heat the buildings and provide hot water for the entire facility, including the new 120 hut cell complex that was being built at the time.”

Allan says the new boilers use the latest technology, which is very energy efficient and consumes much less gas.

“They give the prison reliable, cost effective and energy efficient heating and domestic hot water,” he says.
