An appeal for old uniforms sent Corrections officers hunting through their wardrobes to send to their pre-loved gear to colleagues in Niue.
Niue’s Chief of Police and Prison Director Ross Ardern made the appeal last year.
“Our prison wardens had no uniforms and this was in part reflected in the professionalism they portrayed,” says Ross.
Following Ross’s call, Corrections officers donated old uniform trousers, jackets and shirts for distribution to the Niuean prison wardens.
“The staff are all very proud of their ‘new’ uniforms and I have detected changes in their approach to their work,” Ross says.
“I want to record my gratitude to all the New Zealand Corrections staff who made a contribution to the Niue Prison Service. I can assure you that your efforts are greatly appreciated.”
Ross was a police officer in New Zealand for 30 years before taking up the role of Niue’s Chief of Police last year. Following a restructure of Niue’s Government departments, Ross’ role was expanded to include Prison Director.
With no previous experience in running a prison, Ross describes the new role as a “growing experience”.
“Sadly, the prison was in a very poor state of repair. Considerable effort has gone into making the conditions in the prison a little better and to introducing some rehabilitation for the four long-term prisoners,” he says.
Corrections staff also provided Ross with advice relating to health and rehabilitation of prisoners.
