CIE Instructors across the country are formalising
their skills and experience with the National Certificate
in Public Sector Services (Prison Instruction).
CIE celebrates stakeholders and volunteersCorrections Inmate Employment (CIE) acknowledged stakeholders and various volunteers from the Wellington region on International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, December 5. Chief Executive Barry Matthews hosted an evening showcase event at which training and employment initiatives in prisons were highlighted. Corrections thanked stakeholders and volunteers for their support in upskilling prisoners in employment and training and ultimately assisting in the development of New Zealand’s economy and society. Around 50 representatives from various volunteer and stakeholder groups attended, including government organisations, the Prison Chaplaincy, Prison Fellowship and Release to Work employers.
Congratulations to Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) Engineering Instructor John Hewitson, who is the first in the country to obtain the National Certificate in Public Sector Services (Prison Instruction). The certificate qualifies CIE instructors with a trade background as certified tutors. Once certified, they can assess prisoners’ work and award unit standards and credits in accordance with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Currently, 80 more CIE instructors, of the 271 across the country, are undertaking the three-year course which was introduced at the end of 2003.
