Mangere Community Work Centre held an open day to thank the sponsors who provide work for offenders.

Probation Officer Matehaere Maihi said she was thrilled that the sponsors were being recognised for their good work.

“A lot of them are a bit whakama (shy) about standing up and being recognised, but it gives us a chance to say how much we appreciate them.”

Auckland Community Work Service Manager Wiremu Dixon said that with planned changes in sentencing regimes the sponsors might have an even more important role in working with offenders.

“On the day I saw a strong commitment from staff and sponsors to keep moving ahead together - regardless of their ethnic background. I think Mangere is a real template for staff and the public working together to make their community a safer and better place,” says Wiremu.
