Paeroa Community Probation & Psychological Services staff are making sure people know about the great work they do.
They’re arranging with their work sponsors to put up the newly-designed plaques that recognise the work done by offenders on community work sentences.
One of the plaques now adorns the station wall at historic Goldfields Railway, which runs from Waihi to Waikino. It’s plain for all the locals and holiday-makers who ride the vintage railway to see.
Senior Community Work Supervisor Noel Harrison says work parties of offenders spend the majority of their weekends helping out at Goldfields.
“They go there maybe three weekends out of four to help maintain the track and do repairs. It’s a great source of work for us – we never struggle to find things for our work parties to do.”
Goldfields Manager Robin Millen says Corrections’ input has been vital to the long-term sustainability of the railway.
“Corrections has been helping out at Goldfields for the last 15 years. Putting up this plaque lets us acknowledge the hard work you do for us,” says Robin.
To get a plaque, community work supervisors can nominate a community work project to their service manager. Once approved, use the form on the Corrections intranet to order your plaques. Service managers also have an information sheet available to tell community work partners about the plaques.
The plaques read: “This community project was completed with help from offenders serving community work sentences managed by the Community Probation Service. At work in your community.”
