Don’t clip the new paintwork! A horse and

A horse and rider clear one of the newly painted jumps.Offenders serving community work sentences have applied litre upon litre of paint to new jumps for the equestrian events at the Feilding A&P Show.

Community Probation & Psychological Services, who manage offenders on community-based sentences, have been helping at the Show for at least seven years, so when the Palmerston North Show amalgamated with the Feilding Show this year, the organisers knew where to go for help.

Under the eyes of their community work supervisors and Show organisers, 18 offenders spent over 1000 hours painting more than 200 poles and wings.

Show Secretary Raewyn Weggery was “astounded” at the result.

“They went from just ordinary pieces of wood to superbly painted poles.”

“We recognise the offenders’ involvement in this huge project. They can be very proud of the finished product,” says Mrs Weggery.

Senior Community Work Supervisor Barry Watson says the offenders continued to help throughout the Show - setting up jumps, doing repair work and dismantling everything at the end.

Now the Show’s over for the year, CPPS and the offenders have moved on to pastures new.

“The Kawahata Trust plan to teach Māori carving and other arts at the old Te Ara Kure School, so we’re doing the renovations before they move in,” says Barry.
