Flying high: safer than it looks thanks to a track upgrade from
Corrections' Community Probation & Psychological Services
and offenders serving community work sentences
.

2007-10-bmx-trackThe fun for BMX riders in Motueka is now even more furious, due to a track upgrade courtesy of Corrections and offenders serving community work sentences.

The offenders did much of the initial ground work to build the track nearly ten years ago. Since then they've helped with maintenance, ensuring the track is safe to use.

The offenders have moved truckloads of dirt to elevate the corners of the track to offset erosion, and laid tyres around the boundary.

Community volunteer and Kool Kids Co-ordinator Leon Smits, who runs after school programmes in the area, has been blown away with the work done by offenders.

"The support we've had from the community work offenders has been fantastic," he says.

"It's been something they have been keen to be involved in right from the start because many of them have kids themselves. Their input has been invaluable in keeping the track safe for the kids to use."
