New suite of community sentencing options in use

The new suite of community sentences - including home detention as a stand-alone sentence, and completely new sentences of intensive supervision and community detention - that have been introduced as part of the Government’s Effective Interventions package are now fully operational. The sentences are being managed by Community Probation & Psychological Services staff. An update on how the new sentences are going will appear in the November issue of Corrections News.

Reintegration progress discussions

Regional reintegration team leaders met recently to discuss progress since the five teams were formed in September 2006. The teams - comprised of reintegration team leaders, reintegration caseworkers, social workers and whanau liaison workers - support prisoners to address their living or reintegration needs. Teams service all 20 prisons, and over the past year have received more than 5,000 referrals. This number is expected to increase as the prison muster continues to rise.

For more information on the reintegration teams visit www.corrections.govt.nz  and look under ‘information sheets’ and ‘reducing reoffending’. Corrections staff can find the fact sheets in the ‘about us’ section on Corrnet.

Congratulations to certificate-achieving prisoners

A prisoner from Auckland Women’s Prison has been awarded her National Certificate in Horticulture Level 2. The course generally takes one year to complete, but she took only nine months to finish all of the required unit standards. Another prisoner, from Christchurch Women’s Prison, recently became the first prisoner in New Zealand to achieve a National Certificate in Laundry Standards. Well done to both of them!
