Corrections officer wards off attack on nursing staff
A quick-thinking corrections officer overpowered a Wellington Hospital patient he observed swinging a heavy object at nursing staff and the ward's windows. The corrections officer called out to the patient who then tried to strike him. With help from the nurses the officer backed the patient into a corner and called security. The corrections officer happened to be at the hospital guarding a prisoner admitted to hospital.
CIE finalist in Hospitality Standards Industry Awards
Corrections Inmate Emploments' high standards for prisoners undergoing catering training has been recognised by the Hospitality Standards Industry. CIE was one of two finalists announced for the category of Excellence in Training-organisation. Internal Services Manager Ruth Turner said while CIE didn’t win, being a finalist was an acknowledgment of how hard catering managers and their respective staff had worked.
Prisoner employment on target
The Prisoner Employment Strategy has reached the half-way mark with the Department well on track to reach the target goal.
Launched in June 2006, the strategy aimed to increase the number of prisoners engaged in employment or training from 40 per cent to 60 per cent of the total population by 2010. At the end of the 2007-2008 financial year, 51 per cent of all prisoners and 66 per cent of the sentenced population were engaged in employment or training.
