• The architecture of the new Spring Hill Corrections Facility was recognised in the recent Property Council of New Zealand Awards. The building received the honour of ‘merit’ in the Special Purpose (Community Service) section.
• Corrections has been selected a finalist for the Maori Language Commission’s Maori Language Week awards. The Department was one of three finalists in the central government category, along with IRD (who won) and NZQA.
• The Criminal Justice Outcomes Report released in September, found that overall, New Zealand compares well internationally as a trusted criminal justice system. The report pulls together information from all the criminal justice agencies, giving a unique and useful overview.
• The high quality work and craftsmanship of prisoners was recently exhibited at the Auckland Home Show. The Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) stall showcased contemporary lounge and bedroom furniture crafted by prisoners. The stall also highlighted successful partnerships between prisons and businesses. CIE assesses market trends to identify industries in need of qualified workers, then trains and upskills prisoners to work in those industries. As well as easing regional skills shortages, CIE helps prisoners find meaningful employment upon release.
• We are pleased to announce that the State Services Commission’s annual review of government web sites, between April and June this year, has judged the Corrections website as above average in terms of accessibility.
