4Fautua Pasefika and community leader Neti (Ned) Samson Cook has been nominated to be granted greater access to prisons, so he can reach out to prisoners. Corrections’ Regional Advisor Pacific Sosefo Bourke introduces us to Ned and the critical role Fautua Pasefika play in the well-being of Pacific prisoners.

Ned was one of twelve original Fautua Pasefika elected in Waikato back in 2003. The term Fautua is Samoan and means to 'guide, counsel and advocate' - services that Ned is well-equipped to provide. Prior to becoming a Fautua Pasefika, Ned had been a Waikato PARS prison visitor for many years. Previous experience in dealing with alcohol and drug misuse, and gambling and violence prevention has assisted him in his dialogue with a wide range of prisoners.

Ned believes as a community we have a duty to assist in any way we can. The key to this is being non-judgmental, while trying to understand why our brothers and sisters end up in prison. Ned supports prisoners through regular prison visits, 'Pacific heart-to-heart motivational conversation' and psycho-educational programmes.
Ned believes that people can learn new positive behaviours.  "We dislike inappropriate behaviours", he says, "but we do love people for they are God's creation. The Justice sector is doing its best to reduce crime and re-offending. Now it is up to you and me to help out."

Ned also highlights the importance of coming together as a community to explore ways of helping prisoners prepare for life after release.

Ned says, "Our prison population needs more Fautua Pasefika people with the passion and skills to support prisoners. Most, if not all of them, need direction and guidance, but above all they need love and prayers."
