Earlier this year the Department of Corrections approved the permanent establishment of a number of Volunteer Coordinator positions following a successful trial period. The new team is beginning to take shape and it’s a good time for a few introductions.

Stephen Ferguson – goodwill and creativity5

The new Volunteer Coordinator for the South Island prisons is Stephen Ferguson, already a familiar face in Canterbury. A former prison volunteer himself, Stephen is best known for his 15 years as Chaplain at Christchurch prison.

The ongoing challenge of providing constructive activities to prisoners in high security areas with limited unlock hours does not daunt Stephen. He believes that with goodwill and the use of creative strategies these challenges can be addressed.

Vicky Mavin – new to New Zealand

Newly-appointed Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison Volunteer Coordinator Vicky Mavin has taken on more than just the challenge of new job. Vicky and her family have recently exchanged their life in England for a future in sunny Central Hawke’s Bay.

"Just before leaving England, I used to be Manager of a day care facility for adults with development disabilities", says Vicky. "I had worked in this area for many years, taking a break several years ago to look after my children and then study at University."

After a very busy first two weeks in her new role, Vicky has been overwhelmed by the commitment of the Hawke’s Bay volunteers. "I have heard so many positive commendations from others within the prison. Their work is so integral in supporting prisoners and is highly valued."6

Vicky is very positive about her new role and the decision to create a new life in New Zealand. "The decision to move to New Zealand was a difficult one, particularly leaving family and friends behind and starting again. But we will have so many opportunities here and everyone has been so welcoming. I’m looking forward to getting to grips with the job and getting to know everyone. I already feel proud to be part of a great team."

The new team is taking shape

Margaret Maurice has been confirmed as Volunteer Coordinator for Ngawha, Auckland, Mt Eden and ACRP. Other appointments recently announced include Lynn Smith-McGregor (Tongariro/Rangipo), Tracy Murphy (Wanganui, Manawatu and New Plymouth) and Nadine Allen (Waikeria). Amy Blowers (Wellington) has joined the team on a one year secondment. The new team should be completed very soon, and a full list with contact details will be included in the next issue of CORRvolunteer. In the meantime, we can put you in touch with your local Volunteer Coordinator. Call 04 495 8428 or email volunteering@corrections.govt.nz
