It is approximately ten years since we produced the first issue of Naku - our way of keeping you informed on how we build effective partnerships with Māori to reduce re-offending.
Naku's focus over this time has been on the work our staff do with a number of different community groups and external providers to ensure that the rehabilitation and support we offer encompasses values which are meaningful and effective for Māori.
However we are not alone in doing this good work. It is time to grow Naku to truly reflect more of the good work that is done across other areas in the department towards this important common goal.
While we will continue to bring you success stories of offenders in the community embracing their culture and reconnecting to their whakapapa through tikanga Māori programmes, we hope to also highlight the work we do with Māori prisoners, and the support services available for them and their whānau.
This includes the work our psychologists do, positive outcomes from special prison treatment units such as Te Piriti in Auckland and Kia Marama in Christchurch, and Māori Focus Units at prisons throughout the country.
As with the past issues, the next issue of Naku promises also to be an interesting read and will deliver more news about the work Corrections is doing.
I am sure it will continue to grow and become a more effective bond connecting the work we do with the people who are integral to its success.
Thank you for your support and let's work together to shepherd Naku in this new direction.
Naku noa, na
