The Minister of Corrections Hon Paul Swain has today officially opened the new Community Probation Service service centre on Devon St West, New Plymouth.
The new service centre is an example of the Community Probation Service's co-location project, which brings together community work and probation office facilities under one roof.
Heather Mackie, Regional Manager Central, Community Probation Service, says the new building will benefit both the community and other agencies with which the Service works.
"Combining the existing facilities is part of the Department's commitment to improving its service to the community and meeting its goal of reducing re-offending. Having all the services under one roof is cost-effective and allows us to deliver a more integrated service," says Heather.
Local projects recently carried out by the Community work teams have included ongoing development work at the New Plymouth Pistol Club, Marfell BMX track and Waitara Railway Preservation Society. One-off projects such as painting the Omata Church have also occurred.
"Offenders on Community Work have also assisted the District and Regional Council on parks and reserves including the Bowl of Brooklands and walkways on the mountain. The relationship with the Waitara Employment Initiative has also resulted in some offenders gaining jobs after completing their Community Work hours," says Heather.
