Mark Byers today announced that he would be retiring as Chief Executive of the Department of Corrections, effective from 11 February 2005 and has advised his employer, the State Services Commissioner, of his decision.

Mr Byers said he had decided to take early retirement from the Public Service after serving nine years in a challenging leadership role.

"On reflecting on these years, I have decided it is now time for some changes.

"I have been privileged to lead the Department of Corrections from its formation in October 1995. In the meantime there is plenty to get on with between now and February."
