Department of Corrections chief executive Barry Matthews today announced he would be undertaking a review of the Department's Head office functions and structure.

"I am firmly committed to ensuring the Department is in the best position possible to face the challenges of the future" said Mr Matthews in a message to staff advising of the review. "As you know, the Department has experienced unprecedented growth in the demand for its services over recent years. This review is primarily driven by the need to ensure an effective Head Office function that positions the Department to better deliver on expectations and to both lead and support improved integration of Department functions and service delivery.”

The Department's strategy for integrated offender management and the continuing emphasis on improving service delivery and effectiveness, has led to increasing emphasis on the integration of functions within the Department and an emphasis on doing what works.

The review will identify the optimum Head Office structure for the Department, identify opportunities to increase the level of integration within the Department, and advise on options to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of Head office functions that provide support to the core business units.

Staff and union representatives will be invited to contribute to the review. The review will be completed by an independent consultant who will assess the current structure and develop proposals for improvement both in the short and longer term. It is expected that the selected consultant will be appointed in the next four weeks with the target date for completion of the review confirmed in early July.
