The job is almost over for Peter Dooley, the Manager of the Collaborative Working Arrangement (CWA) at Spring Hill Corrections Facility.
Construction has all but finished at the site, and on 31 July 2007 the keys to the last of the four new prisons were handed over. It’s been a massive undertaking for Dooley and the CWA partners, including Corrections, Mainzeal, Stephenson and Turner, and Works Infrastructure.
Over 3,500 contractors have worked on the site during the construction of the facility, and during peak times in the process there were as many as 850 tradespeople on site each day. Not an easy task for Peter Dooley to manage.
”30 different organisations formed the CWA supply chain on the project. We developed a great unity of purpose on site, with all of the contractors working to stringent health and safety requirements and meeting some very challenging deadlines and milestones,” said Mr Dooley.
"This collaborative environment was incredibly important on a project of this size. Because of the widespread nature of the site construction and site works had to be run at the same time. In addition to building 51 buildings over 40 hectares,
"It’s been a massive undertaking, and it’s incredibly satisfying to see the site pretty well finished and ready to hand over. It’s been like constructing and landscaping a small town, with 51 buildings over 40 hectares. Everyone who worked on the site has done an amazing job,” said Mr Dooley.
Another person who is glad to see the construction phase successfully delivered is Gavin Dalziel, Acting Regional Manager Waikato/Central Region.
"We’re looking forward to this site being part of the region. It has been purpose built to aid staff in their work to rehabilitate and reintegrate prisoners, and it provides an excellent environment for everyone to operate in. I believe that this facility will be of huge benefit to the Department, to prisoners, and ultimately to the community,” said Mr Dalziel.
"We want to be a good neighbour and a good employer for the region.”
Corrections officially took ownership of the site on 31 July, and will begin staff training and build up in preparation for the first prisoners arriving in November.
