Staff at Auckland Prison were today awarded the inaugural Northern Regional Quality Award during a ceremony at the Prison.
General Manager of the Department of Corrections Prison Services Harry Hawthorn presented the award to staff and managers at Auckland Prison.
The award is for consistent performance and improvement in the 07/08 reporting year which completed in July. Sponsored by Northern Regional Manager Warren Cummins the award recognises the prison's significant improvement in maintaining a high level of internal compliance, a key aspect of ensuring the security and safety of the prison.
“Compliance is only one aspect of the many complex demands on the prison and Auckland has consistently demonstrated a high level of achievement in this area over the 07/08 reporting period,” says Mr Cummins.
“The award also recognises the enormous effort by staff and managers at Auckland who all have been required to pay keen attention to this aspect of operations while dealing with the competing demands of running the facility.”
“Most people are unaware that as well as operating the only maximum security facility Auckland also houses lower classification prisoners who are undergoing intensive programmes, working and learning as they progress towards reintegrating into society.
"To achieve high standards of security and safety in this environment is a testament to the custodial staff and management at the site.
“I am especially proud of the determination and effort shown by the staff to achieve the standard necessary to receive the award and it recognises a major achievement for Auckland in the context of being an older facility with very complex operations occurring on a daily basis,” says Mr Cummins.
Another award will also be presented in the region to an individual who has successfully and individually led a number of units within the Northland Region Correctional Facility to achieve very high standards. This person is currently on leave and the award will be presented on their return.
