3 October

Today was a significant occasion for two Corrections staff members, who each received a special New Zealand Police Area Commander award acknowledging the assistance they gave to Police during an incident at an Otorohanga bank.

Corrections staff and guests also gathered at the Waipa Workingman’s Club to recognise the good conduct and long service of 48 custodial and non-custodial staff members from Waikeria Prison.

Twenty-four staff members received Long Service awards for 14, 21, 28 and 35 years service to the Department. The recipients include Corrections Officers, a Pacific Island Culture adviser and a nurse.

The remaining 24 staff will receive 7 year certificates for their long service and good conduct.

Central Regional Manager Leanne Field believes the awards acknowledge and recognise the excellent contribution that Corrections staff make to their communities.

“The hard work that Corrections staff do is often hidden from the public by a prison’s walls. But their efforts ensure a secure and humane environment for offenders while also providing them with training and support to reduce re-offending,” she says.

“Their efforts play an important part in making our communities safer, and it is very important that this is recognised.

“Working for Corrections can be a very demanding job, our staff are often working in what can be a volatile environment.

“Despite this our staff also find their work extremely interesting and rewarding. No two days are the same working in a prison and our staff have a real passion for their work.

“The event also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the important role families play in the work of our staff. Family provide invaluable support to staff in their work and it is pleasing that many family members attended today’s event."

Leanne says staff continually demonstrate Corrections’ core PRIDE values - Professionalism, Responsiveness, Integrity, Diversity and Effectiveness and Efficiency.

“The strength of any organisation lies in its people. I want to recognise recipients and congratulate them on their hard work.”
