The re-opening of two units at Tongariro/Rangipo Prison is opening the door to exciting and challenging job opportunities for motivated individuals who are looking to get ahead during the recession.
“The units have been empty recently because we haven’t needed the beds,” says acting Prison Manager Steve Greer.
“However, with increasing muster pressures we will be re-opening the two 60 bed units over the coming months which necessitates us to hire new corrections officers.
“Corrections officers are at the frontline of improving community safety; it’s a fantastic opportunity for responsible members of society to become part of a great organisation.
“To be a corrections officer you need to have good people skills and a ‘can do’ attitude. It is an interesting and varied role, with no two days the same. The work hours are flexible and you become part of a close-knit community environment.
“Corrections officers are responsible for ensuring prisoners are safely, securely and humanely contained during their sentence and they actively work with prisoners to make positive changes to their behaviour.
“This is also a position that offers a clear career path for motivated professionals. We have a number of prison managers around the country who have worked their way up from the floor. There are also specialist roles in areas such as Dog Handling, Crime Prevention and Sentence Planning.”
Corrections officers receive full training and support with a six-week initial training course and on the job training to ensure they are confident in their position.
