8 January

Staff conducting security checks around the perimeter of New Plymouth Prison on 4 January have been credited with preventing a tennis ball stuffed with drugs winding up in the hands of prisoners.

“Staff were conducting an external security check around the boundary of the prison when a tennis ball was observed lying on the ground outside the perimeter fence,” says Acting Prison Manager Lyn O'Connor.

“The tennis ball was recovered and around 20 grams of cannabis leaf was found hidden inside. Any chance of the drugs entering the prison was thwarted by the vigilance of the staff in observing the ball outside the prison perimeter.

“Our staff continue to be steadfast in their monitoring of attempts to introduce contraband items into the prison.

“We know there is a significant demand for drugs among some prisoners and that prisoners often pressure family, friends and associates to smuggle drugs into prison. It was very pleasing that we could seize these drugs and prevent them from being taken by prisoners, and we encourage anyone being pressured to help prisoners get drugs to let us know by ringing 0800 JAIL SAFE (5245 7233).”
