Security measures and the quick actions of Corrections staff prevented prison security from being compromised this morning at the Mt Eden Prison site.
Two intruders were spotted when they tripped an external wire alarm on the temporary walkway between Auckland Central Remand Prison (ACRP) and Mt Eden Prison.
“I have no idea what these guys were up to, but two men were located by security cameras on the temporary walkway early this morning,” Assistant Regional Manager Grace Smit said.
“Staff on duty immediately rushed to the area and the intruders fled. Police were called and are still trying to apprehend them.”
“The incident was a good test of our security measures and our staff, and it’s pleasing to be able to confirm that at no time were the intruders able to get inside the security fence,” Smit said.
“It is highly unusual for anyone to attempt to break into prison, and we can only assume they were daredevils looking for a bit of Easter Sunday entertainment. Or perhaps they failed to realise that April Fool’s day has been and gone.”
