Corrections Minister Judith Collins presenting Corrections Officer Anton Tukariri with his award.Corrections Officer Anton Tukariri was today honoured for his outstanding achievements during the Department’s Initial Training Course held over the past six weeks.

“The Minister’s Excellence Award is testimony of the effort and time that Anton has put into his training, consistently displaying all the skills required as a Corrections Officer,” says General Manager Prison Services Harry Hawthorn.

“Not only has he achieved excellent results for all the written tests throughout the training, but he also demonstrated a high level of competence in the practical assessment phase of the course.

“Anton also helped and supported his fellow classmates at every opportunity. He was an exemplary role model in all areas including dress standard, timekeeping and dealing with all others, including the training staff.

"Corrections Officers play an extremely important part in our society. They are dedicated to keeping the public safe from some of our most dangerous and difficult people.”

Anton was one of 42 Corrections Officers who graduated today, along with three Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) Instructors.

“These Corrections Officers will be working at Spring Hill Corrections Facility, Otago Corrections Facility and Northern Region Corrections Facility, while the CIE staff will be based here at Rimutaka Prison.

“While Anton is being celebrated as the outstanding new recruit, all the graduates today showed a willingness to learn and improve on the skills and tools needed to have a successful and rewarding career with the Department of Corrections.”

The work of Corrections Officers in making our communities safer is often under-recognised, so the Minister’s Award is important to acknowledge not just the hard work of those receiving it, but the contribution of all Corrections Officers says Mr Hawthorn.
