Ten prisoners at Wanganui Prison have today celebrated their graduation from a Level 2 Universal College of Learning Certificate (UCOL) in Motor Industry.
The 13-week course, provided by Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) in partnership with UCOL, included a collection of unit standards which contribute towards a NZQA National Certificate in the field of small motors and mechanics.
The unit standards cover elements on workshop engineering, preventative maintenance and engine operations.
“This graduation marks a step towards a brighter future for the prisoners involved by providing them with the appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities to gain employment in the motor industry upon release,” says CIE Central Area Operations Manager Julie Gowan.
“The course provides a foundation for progression into a diverse range of roles, including automotive engineering, motorcycle engineering, automotive electrical engineering, automotive dismantling, automotive machinery, small engine repair, and power boat servicing.
“It is always encouraging to be able to celebrate these graduations with the prisoners who have worked so hard to gain these qualifications,” Julie says.
CIE offers employment and training opportunities for prisoners. Research shows that prisoners who find sustainable employment on release are less likely to re-offend.
