Hastings based Probation Officer Petrina Seymour was today presented with the Minister’s Excellence Award by the Minister of Corrections Hon Judith Collins.

The award is in recognition of the outstanding achievement she demonstrated during Probation Officer curriculum training and the high standard of her day-to-day work.

The Minister’s Excellence Award was established to recognise staff who have acted with distinction during their training and in applying this learning in their work. A number of Excellence Awards have been presented to corrections officers who have graduated from the Department’s Initial Training course and the award has now been extended to probation officers who have completed their curriculum.

General Manager Community Probation Services Katrina Casey, said Petrina was selected as the Central Region recipient for the Minister’s Excellence Award because of the considerable impact she has made as a probation officer with the Service Centre’s Prison Release Team.

“Petrina has already demonstrated her ability by being nominated to manage the Domestic Violence portfolio, and has put procedures and practices in place to deliver daily information to probation officers about offenders who had Domestic Violence matters addressed by Police.

“Her approach to this portfolio is indicative of Petrina's professional and can-do approach to her work. She has grasped probation practice quickly and applied her own skills and thinking in a way that shows she is a true practitioner.

“Petrina's excellence in probation practice, personal high standards of work, cheerful demeanor, positive attitude and excellent presentation set her aside as a truly remarkable team member and make her a worthy recipient of this award.”

Probation officers play an important role in the Justice system by ensuring offenders comply with the requirements of their sentence and in helping offenders make the necessary changes to live offence-free lives, Ms Casey said.

“The Minister’s Award is one way of recognising the important work of probation officers and in encouraging and recognising their professionalism and expertise.”
