A probation officer destined to work in the Waitakere region was today presented with the Minister’s Excellence Award by the Minister of Corrections Hon Judith Collins.

Renee Clarkson was presented with the award in recognition of her outstanding achievements during her Probation Officer curriculum training and the high standard of her day-to-day work.

The Minister’s Excellence Award was established to recognise staff who have acted with distinction during their training and in applying this learning in their work. A number of Excellence Awards have been presented to corrections officers who have graduated from the Department’s Initial Training course and the award has now been extended to probation Officers who have completed their curriculum.

General Manager Community Probation Services Katrina Casey said Renee was selected as the Northern Region recipient for the award because of her ongoing demonstration of going above and beyond to deliver a professional service to the community.

“Recently Renee was involved with the management of a complex case where an offender was seeking to leave to attend a tangi at very short notice. The considerable work she did, on a Saturday, to ensure that there was appropriate supervision and monitoring available while the offender was away from home and at the marae meant he could attend.

“Renee’s approach also helped to strengthen the relationship with the offenders wider whanau.”

Probation officers play an important role in the Justice system through ensuring offenders comply with the requirements of their sentence and in helping offenders make the necessary changes to live offence free lives, Ms Casey said.

“The Minister’s Award is one way of recognising the important work of probation officers and in encouraging and recognising their professionalism and expertise.”
