The Department of Corrections confirmed today that an internal employment investigation into three Christchurch Prison staff has resulted in disciplinary action.

South Island Prisons regional manager Paul Monk said after a thorough employment investigation, it was found that there were breaches of the Department’s Code of Conduct by the three staff, and disciplinary action has been taken.

“The Department takes all allegations against staff seriously. We expect high standards from our staff and we do not condone any breaches of the Department’s Code of Conduct,” said Mr Monk.

Mr Monk said the investigation took longer than it should have, but the investigation into the allegations had to be robust.

“We had to ascertain whether the allegations could be substantiated or not. I was pleased that most of the allegations were found to have no substance,” said Mr Monk.

Mr Monk said, however, that although the investigation found most procedures were complied with, there were some instances where breaches of the Department’s Code of Conduct did occur.

“I am disappointed that any of the allegations were found to be valid as staff at Christchurch Prison are committed to being professional and to carrying out their duties to the highest standard.

“However, when I decided on the disciplinary action to be taken, I took into consideration the staffs’ previous service records and how similar breaches have been treated by the Public Prisons Service in the past.”

Mr Monk said he would not confirm the details of the disciplinary action, as it was a matter between the Department and the employees.
